Recommended Routes
Below are a few recommended routes, including great places to stop and enjoy the view, get a coffee or fuel up with some fantastic food.
The Route
Take the Cinder Track north towards Whitby. There's a gradual climb as you leave Robin Hood's Bay, with fantastic views out across the fields and over the sea.
When you get to Hawsker you can either turn around and come back down the Cinder Track. Or, turn left when you reach the main road then left again and follow the B1447 back to Robin Hood's Bay. You'll get a great view over Fylingdales and across to Ravenscar as you reach "Old St. Stephen's" church in Raw.
Highlights
- Stop at Coast Cafe Bar at Northcliffe Holiday Park for light refreshments
- Call in at The Hare & Hounds in Hawsker for great food and a refreshing drink
- Pause and enjoy the view from Old St. Stephen's church
The Route
Follow the Cinder Track north, climbing as you leave Robin Hood's Bay. When you get to the main road in Hawsker, cross using the pedestrian crossing and head right, and go through the gate on your left to continue along the Cinder Track.
Shortly after crossing the Viaduct you'll find yourselves in Whitby, veering off the Cinder Track and into Beever's car park. Turn right and head through the tunnel. Follow the road down into the town centre.
Return the same way. Or, head up to the Abbey and then follow Hawsker Lane for 3 miles. You'll find yourselves back in Hawsker, where you can either take the Cinder Track or continue along the B1447 back to Bay.
Highlights
- Whitby Brewery for great local beer and handmade pizza
- Visit Whitby Abbey and step back in time
- Enjoy some fish and chips
The Route
Head south, joining the Cinder Track off Linger's Hill. Cross the road at Fylingdale Cricket Pitch and continue to follow the Cinder Track, gradually climbing as you pass Boggle Hole, the disused alum mines and eventually arrive at Ravenscar village.

- Take a detour at Boggle Hole and head down to the Youth Hostel, they have a great cafe
- Call in at the North York Moors Visitor Centre to find out more about the area
- Visit Ravenscar Tea Rooms for refreshments
The Route
Follow the Cinder Track south. Once you arrive in Ravenscar, follow the road past the entrace to Ravenscar Hotel, to the other end of the village. You'll find the Cinder Track re-starts in the far corner of Station Square, near the Tea Rooms.
Follow the Cinder Track all the way to Scarborough. You'll pass Hayburn Wyke, Cloughton and Burniston on the way.

- Visit Ravenscar Tea Rooms for refreshments
